Some fun Family Reading Activities

Try these Fun Family Reading Activities:

Set up a Family Reading Night. Turn off the TV and computer one night a week and read aloud together. Pick a book and take turns reading it, or let everyone choose their own reading material and share it. It could even be a silly song book. Buy or rent an audio book. Listen to it on a family car trip and watch the time fly by. Tapes or CD's are available in book stores and at the public library.

Read the Sunday Newspaper together. Each family member could be assigned a section of the paper to "report" on . This is a good way to sharpen a child's reading comprehension skills and increase vocabulary. Read the books your child is assigned in school. Demonstrate to your child that homework is important by also reading the book or perhaps sitting down and reading part of the book together.

Supplement reading with a visit to a museum, zoo, nature trail, aquarium, nursery, train ride or whatever it may be that will keep the child 's spark for learning alive. All children have unique fascinations that deserve exploring. Parents can guide them in finding ways to research an interesting topic even deeper.
